Last Saturday saw the Bell’s
of Cappagh 10k race take place at Springwell Forest
on an unbelievably pleasant day. Runner’s from as far away as Omagh took
part in this tough race. Pegasus AC are the organisers of the race which sees
runners endurance tested over the hilly 2 laps of the course. Pegasus had 4 runners
taking part while the other club members marshalled the course.
For
the 2nd time in 3 years super vet Matt Wray of Ballymena
and Antrim emerged as the champion, running in a superb time of 35:02 to decimate the field.
Youth Olympic 2000m steeplechase silver medal winner Noel Collins would have provided the challenge if not for shin
splints curtailing his race. Declan McCarthy (City of Derry)
had to settle for 2nd while Omagh’s Conor Moore was first Under 20 in 3rd overall (37:43). Top Male Open man was Pegasus runner Stephen ‘Frankie’ O’Hara, storming
home below the 40 minute barrier. Julie Murphy of Lagan
Valley won the women’s race for the first time in 46:00, just ahead of 2nd
placed Linda Gillen (again of Pegasus AC). Debbie McLaughlin and Michaela Black
came home in 1:00:45 to complete the grinding course together.
Congratulations to all the winners and special thanks to Peter Bell of Bell’s
Conservatories for his continued sponsorship!
