Saturday saw the NI and Ulster
Age Group Track and Field Championships held at the Antrim Forum. The blisteringly
hot weather was very welcome with sun cream at the ready! The club had 2 representatives
at the event, namely Andrew Richardson and Joel Bradley who competed against the best Ulster had to offer in their age groups.
The Coleraine Academical Institution
pupils definitely did not look out of place and put in fighting performances to mix it with the top performers in their respective
events. Andrew took part in the 1994 Shot Putt and Javelin where he was one of
the best in the field. With a best of 10.76m in the shot putt and 34.97 in the
javelin, he managed to grab silver and bronze medals but also qualified for the All Ireland finals in 3 weeks time into the
bargain. Great throwing from sporting all-rounder! Joel on the other hand was taking part in the ultra-competitive 1995 800m event where 27 competitors meant
heats had to be run to decide the 8 finalists. Joel kept in touch with the leaders
during his heat and managed to pick them off one by one until the finish, just missing the heat win by 1.5 seconds. He qualified 7th fastest to make the final where he knew the going would be tough at the front. A resilient Joel made sure he ran to his best by ending up 6th (2.37.43)
and only 2 places off an All-Ireland spot.
Pegasus AC would like to pass
on our congratulations to both the guys and wish Andrew the best of luck in 3 weeks time at the All-Irelands!
One other result to mention was
from the Newry Marathon which took place a couple of weeks ago and saw Chris Denton test himself over the classic distance. 308 competitors made this a successful debut event with good competitive racing throughout
the field. In the end, Chris put in a great run to come home 10th
in 3:00.07 to represent the locals very well!
Training for track and field takes place on Thursday evenings
at Rugby Avenue
from 6.30-8.00pm for all young
people so come along and give it a go!
